$249 a Year for a Job Minnesota May Not Even Require

The Brand Is Real Value, and We Will Say So

LegalZoom is the name most people reach for first, and there is a reason it survived twenty-plus years in a category littered with vanished startups. It is a large, established, publicly scrutinized company. Its support infrastructure is deep. When a business owner tells a nervous co-founder or a skeptical accountant which service is handling the company's legal mail, "LegalZoom" ends the conversation and a smaller name usually does not. Recognition is a genuine product feature and some buyers should pay for it on purpose.

$249, Flat, Renewing Automatically

LegalZoom's registered agent service is $249 a year. Our review found no first-year promotion attached to it, no introductory tier, and no reduced rate for buying alongside a formation package. It bills at $249 and it renews at $249 on autopilot. That consistency is worth something. Plenty of companies in this space quote a low opening figure and let the real one arrive quietly twelve months later; LegalZoom does not, and the highest published rate in the category is at least the honest one.

The question is what the $249 purchases. In Minnesota, a registered agent's statutory job is narrow and identical at every price point: keep a real office at the registered address in Minnesota, stay reachable during normal business hours, and hand over what is delivered. Nothing in state law grades the performance of that duty by brand.

The Part Minnesota Makes Awkward for Everyone Selling This

Before you compare $249 against $99 or anything else, there is a fact about Minnesota that neither of us puts in an advertisement. Your registered office is compulsory and has to be a genuine office location inside the state, and Minn. Stat. § 5.36 insists that an agent's own business address match that registered office exactly, which quietly rules out anything built on forwarding mail from elsewhere. But for a domestic Minnesota LLC, naming an agent at that office is optional. The articles ask for one only if you have one, and NONE is a valid entry.

So if you are a Minnesota-formed LLC currently paying $249 a year, you are not paying it because Minnesota told you to. You are paying it because you decided a staffed address is worth having, which is a perfectly good reason. It just means the only fair question is what a staffed Minnesota address should cost. Businesses registered from outside Minnesota do not get this choice; for them an agent is required, and the question narrows to price and handling alone.

A hundred and fifty dollars a year, repeating for as long as the company exists.
